Examining the dangerous aftermath of racially charged shootings in a small Southern town, SHOTS FIRED is a dramatic new event series that is a "why done it?" and a "who done it?" From Gina Prince-Bythewood ("Beyond the Lights," "The Secret Life of Bees," "Love and Basketball") and Reggie Rock Bythewood ("Beyond the Lights," "Notorious"), the 10-hour event series is an explosive look at the criminal justice system. When an African-American police officer kills an unarmed white college student, a small town in North Carolina is turned upside-down. Before the town has a chance to grapple with this tragedy, the neglected murder of an African-American teen is brought to light, re-opening wounds that threaten to tear the town apart.

Every single critics' review I read before watching the series premiere of 'Shots Fired' made it sound like I was about to view an awful mini-series. And I'm SO glad I didn't pass on seeing it due to their harsh critiques, or I would have missed out on a really thought provoking TV show!Although this is yet another entry in a recent series of programs regarding race relations, I found 'Shots Fired' to be more compelling than a similar show, 'American Crime'. In an intriguing reversal of current events, the show opens with black cop Joshua Beck (Tristan Mack Wilds) shooting a white kid during a traffic stop, claiming that he was trying to grab his gun. People immediately start accusing Beck of racial profiling, believing he only pulled the teen over because he was in a black neighborhood...so he must be buying drugs. Sensing a community uproar, the Governor (Helen Hunt) calls in the Department of Justice to handle the investigation. This brings Preston Terry (Stephan James) ~ who is fresh out of law school, and his seasoned investigator Ashe Akino (Sanaa Latham) to town. This 10 part mini-series looks to cover police corruption, racial discrimination, political aspirations of current office holders, and the problems of systemic racism. I found the first episode to be very compelling, seeing different angles of a police shooting ~ from an almost all white police department, to an almost all black community. But one thing is for sure ~ I'm certainly glad I didn't listen to the critics first on this one!

What question? What would happen if a black officer shot an unarmed white man? Now, just to be clear, I say man on purpose... The "victim" is an adult. A college "kid." Would a black cop go to jail for shooting him?Enter the slick prosecutor who is only chosen for his color, and the line crossing investigator who has plenty of her own skeletons. Their job is to find out what really happened and attempt to prevent community outrage. I would like to give you my thoughts on how I think this will go, but I don't like giving spoilers. Instead I will say that I am slightly intrigued but the previews made me expect more. The overall acting is OK, but nobody really wows you, and the subplots feel very much like an afterthought. The recipe here is glaring: Sprinkle in some relationship problems here, some "shadow of my brother" baggage there, mix with hot-topic of the day, and garnish with big name cameo... Profit. Right? We'll see.7/10 because it is a valid question and I do sense potential, but if things don't get better the final score can easily land below 5. I think TV is supposed to get preachy at times, and it is supposed to push boundaries, but it works best when the people watching are also entertained. I hope they didn't get so caught up in their message that the mystery ends up being unsatisfying.

I thought the first episode was captivating from the start. The story started with a bang and kept my attention till the end of the episode. I'm definitely intrigued to watch the next episode. The Characters definitely gave me personality - Sanaa Lathan gives a lot of sass, which absolutely loved! You know she's going to play the bad cop in the show. Stephan James oozed with personality and every word that came out of his mouth, I believed. So I'm going to hang on to my seat and wait for a few more episodes.
